The Hidden Threat

6/9/2025

There are many nasty people living in our country. I never realized how many until Trump became president.

I think they must have spent years hiding their true nature, and now they feel free to show the venom they have long kept hidden.

Of course, being responsible for unleashing it will put Trump and his buddies into Dante’s literature. But what sickens me is the huge number of regular type individuals who have been released from societal constraint.

And they are everywhere, aren’t they, demonstrating the hatred which is their true nature?

They are employees of ICE (U. S. Custom and Immigration Enforcement), for example. They seem to have no trouble physically hurting people as they snatch them from schools or streets or pretty much anywhere they want. They wear masks as they violate rights so we will not know who they are because they fear someone might come and violate their rights.

They’re certainly not the only ones whose ugliness has been unleashed. How many neo-Nazi groups have you heard about lately? Twenty years ago they would have been a rarity and universally condemned. Now they proudly wave their flag and celebrate the free speech amendment they would deny to others.

Many express their venom on social media, modern ubiquitous platforms ready made for hate mongering.

Some serving in the National Guard unleash tear gas on protesters.

The list could go on and on. The book banners and others determined to ruin our education system from preschool to graduate studies. The religious fanatics whose goal is installing a national religion that is not even close to being religious. The men who want to return women to the kitchen.

Remember, these purveyors of hatred I’m talking about are not in the seats of power. They are among us. Our neighbors? Our fellow employees? Our friends?

How do these people sleep at night? Do they feel sick about the way they treated fellow humans that day? Or are they proud and pleased with their control over others and the freedom to exercise it?

I hope I’m wrong, but they seem content with their actions and look forward to continuing them.

And where did they come from? Have they always had this tendency for cruelty and now feel free to let it flow?

Are there even more now given permission to emerge and participate in the ugliness that is part of their nature but have held it dormant because of past fears of censure?

When I speak with people I come across, are any of them in that hidden category that could emerge at a moment’s notice and threaten me?

How far would they go? Would they report me for expressing my views? I heard someone in the Trump camp, in a tribute to dictatorship, say people should report any statement of opposition to Trump’s leadership. Think Nazi Germany or modern Russia and China.

It’s a sad assessment of our national character.

What If?

During his first term, Donald Trump informed us he was the best president ever, with the remote possibility that he might be second to Lincoln. He later clarified that the possible exception did not hold.

Most if not all independent assessments rated him among the worst of our presidents.

I feel confident that this time in office he will be classified far lower than his earlier standing.

I also feel confident that he will again inform us of his superior assessment among all the previous leaders of our land.

I’ve been toying with the question of whether there was any possibility he could have taken a different approach to governing and really become an outstanding president.

Bear with me while we explore that idea.

When Trump won the 2024 election, he had about half the population in his pocket. They would go along with anything he did. No matter how foolhardy. Or how wise.

The other half of the citizenry cringed at the prospect of another Trump presidency and, justifiably as it has turned out, feared what was to come.

But what if, after winning the election, instead of blowing steam he committed to serving all the people of the country? I think his base would do whatever he said. I think the rest of us would have been so relieved we might have given him a chance. Perhaps he could have had the entire country willing to provide him a fresh start.

He could still push certain Republican programs. We’ve always had differences of opinion, but they have been held in ways that didn’t inspire fear. Maybe we could support some subjects, perhaps like aiming toward a balanced budget. If it was done carefully.

Of course, some of his sycophants might abandon him; certainly his Project 2025 buddies would. But I bet most would have stayed with him.

Especially if he worked to shore up Social Security, healthcare, and disaster relief, areas that affect most of the population. He wouldn’t have to talk about climate change, but he could still accomplish a lot in that area if he was only willing.

Alas, none of this did happen nor could it have happened. Trump is just too insecure and angry to become great. He does not have greatness in him.

He missed the opportunity to truly be special, preferring to act the spoiled little boy who thinks retribution and destruction are manly traits rather than the childish attitudes they are.

DEI

4/15/2025

Our president, our governor, and so many more have explained to us how we have suffered under the stress of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) far too long. You know, the program where there is recognition that certain classes of people have been treated unfairly in the past when it come to things like workplaces and education. DEI programs attempt to partially rectify this by teaching about related history and, are you ready for this, allowing consideration of such factors in job applications and admission to college.

Our government clearly sees injustice in this emphasis and is hell bent on driving it from our society.

So, who is really affected by the elimination of DEI?

Well, there are the people who don’t look like our leaders. Blacks, for example. Imagine the unfair help they have received simply because they still are emerging from centuries of slavery and Jim Crow. No more will that aid be available. About that slavery and Jim Crow, by the way. It will be wiped out of our history if the government gets its way. We certainly don’t want it taught to high school kids and others who may feel uncomfortable upon learning facts. Because the “real” history of our country is based on the founding fathers, and the truism that many of them had slaves doesn’t matter. Textbooks will have to reflect this new reality. Sure, in some cases we can mention a Black’s name if it is a newsworthy event. But just because, for example, one is the first Black to fly into space, that is not to be mentioned. Any photographs showing it should be removed from web sites. The elimination of DEI in college admissions already is creating a significant drop in Black enrollees.

And then there are those who don’t talk like the leaders. You know, the ones with accents and even, gasp, those who have not yet mastered the simplicities of our language. These people can’t be real Americans or have rights in this country no matter what citizenship or visa papers they produce. Even if they’ve lived here their entire lives. Instead of helping them with DEI initiatives, we are going to work hard to deport them and make any who remain live in constant fear.

Another group which has benefited by DEI programs are those whose lifestyle differs from that of the leaders. In particular, LGBTQ+ individuals who have worked so long to be accepted and have endured such nasty prejudice. Well, those in charge clearly see that getting rid of DEI for them is the right course. Not only because under it this group has in the past received unfair special protection and benefits. But because they represent a real threat—because they are different.

There’s another large group that the leaders want to marginalize. Women! Now this is a bit tricky because, you see, some women are white, speak perfect English, and are not gay. Yet when it comes to hiring or admission to college, there has in the past been recognition that there might be real advantages in encouraging women applicants. Clearly unfair! Talking out of one side of their mouths, leaders have appointed women to important positions, like Chief of Staff. But the other side of their mouths gives us the real feelings: women should receive little education, keep a home and stay in it, and have lots of children. Preferably white, male, and straight children. Do not use words in documents like “women,” “female,” and “her.” Welcome to the Handmaiden’s Tale.

I think elimination of DEI is accomplishing a lot. After all, these morally upright leaders have thrown out any special history of or special aid for Blacks, Hispanics, gays, and women. History is being rewritten so members of these groups will not be noted for groundbreaking achievements. Photographs of their accomplishments are being removed from various sites.

But, in my opinion, the work has not gone far enough and I’m disappointed in our leaders for doing a sloppy job.

Because there is another special group for which the so-called elimination of DEI actually has given a distinct advantage. Essentially, this means DEI hasn’t been fully expunged. Hopefully our leaders will soon correct this oversight.

What is this group?

White people, of course, especially white males. The revised history books still have pictures of white males. They get appointed to all the top spots like they have in the past. It’s clear they are benefitting by this unrecognized diversity which gives them extra advantages.

It is not right and I’m hopeful our leaders will soon see the wisdom of this argument and take appropriate steps. Like not using words in documents such as “men,” “male,” and “him.”

Aren’t you sure something will be done about this inequitable situation?

Hah!

Billionaires Deciding for Thousandaires

3/28/2025

Our country is being run by billionaires. Do you feel comfortable about that?

I don’t.

I don’t think they have the slightest understanding of living a life not dripping with money.

I’m a lucky thousandaire. I have a roof over my head and I’m not starving or wondering where the next meal will come from. But so many people are. Or are living on the streets because they can’t afford rent. To the billionaires, the concept of poverty translates to keeping those pesky misfits out of their lives.

One of those billionaires is our president. He lies so much and cheats so much that it’s hard to know just how much money he has amassed. It’s a good thing that when he was younger he had Daddy to pull him out of trouble.

Another one is Elon Musk. The richest man in the world. There is a lot that impresses me about him. To me it takes a gigantic amount of courage and self-confidence to start a huge venture like a company of the magnitude of SpaceX. And to have the vision to believe in recoverable boosters. It truly is remarkable that he could have become so much of a leader in space flight in an area requiring massive investment that only the government could do in the past. I certainly don’t begrudge him amassing huge wealth from his courage and success.

But he’s not a nice man.

And his success as a businessman doesn’t mean he understands government and governing. Seems to me he’s more familiar with the “king” concept of government than the democratic one. After all, a kingdom is a lot easier to understand than a democracy because it’s a much simpler idea. And, in fact, his actions the past two months prove the point that he doesn’t understand (or care) about democracy. And he’s just one representative of all the richies now in charge.

Their inability to understand thousandaires makes it easy for them, in their quest to save money, to propose a decrease in Social Security benefits or a cut in Medicare reimbursements. After all, in their minds it amounts to a trivial cutback for any one individual, a cutback which, if applied to themselves, would be filled with just the tiniest bit of their great fortune. But to many thousandaires such a cutback means loss of a meal or eviction.

Similarly, can a billionaire even conceive of not being able to pay a medical bill. To them it would be no big deal to cover a medical procedure. But to many thousandaires it could result in delay of medical treatment and be a death sentence.

But I bet the billionaires will accept any benefits they might happen to receive.

Because when you’re a billionaire you can never have too much money.

Alas, when you’re a thousandaire you can never have enough money.

So why don’t the people do something about it. After all, the thousandaires overwhelmingly outnumber the billionaires?

I wish I had an answer. It’s discouraging, because in a recent poll conducted in my state well over half the people thought Trump and his henchmen were doing a wonderful job. My caring neighbor about whom I’ve spoken before agrees.

What is wrong with us?

The Clawless Hammer

3/11/2025

The man wanted to construct a beautiful box in which to store his many important papers. He wasn’t much of a woodworker, but he knew he could do the job because he was smarter than everyone else.

And, because he was so smart, he knew he needed a hammer. He took himself down to the hardware store and asked to be shown the hammers. He saw one with a straight edge on one side, which he knew was what would pound nails into one piece of wood to hold it to another. The other side was a claw, that is, a curved piece of metal with a slot designed to pull nails. It was a beautiful hammer.

But the man knew he didn’t need the claw because he would never make a mistake and hence not have the need to extract nails. So instead, he bought a different hammer with a straight edge on one side and a rounded piece of metal on the other, just because he liked the looks. The clerk told him it was a ball pean hammer.

When the man got home, he nailed board to board and produced a box of just the size he wanted. He examined the finished product and pronounced it perfect. A close examination showed some nails sticking out while others had entered the wood and then bent over.

The man admired his work and told everyone stories about his expertise in constructing it using the hammer he had purchased. He was asked questions about that hammer. He responded by saying, “Oh, I’ve got what I want. I don’t need it anymore.” At that point he picked up the tool and said, “You’ve done your job” and threw it under a passing bus.

This little story reminded me of the MAGA movement. If you are a part of that movement, and I doubt you are since you are reading this post, I have a few questions for you.

Do you happen to be a farmer, and are you concerned about the on again off again tariffs Trump is imposing?

Or do you work for the federal government and has your life been disrupted by outright firing or fear of what will happen to you in the future?

Are you on Social Security? Do you worry about the push to reduce the number of employees in that department, a move that certainly will increase the difficulty in accessing assistance from them or perhaps even delay or disrupt your payments?

Do you fly for work or fun? Are you worried about the on again off again debate to fire or hire air traffic controllers, especially in view of all the recent flying incidents?

Are you worried about incurring a sickness because the health warning system is becoming gutted, or your Medicaid is threatened?

Are you a veteran concerned about the staff cuts taking place at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs?

I’m sure many of you will be affected in negative ways by the above and other changes taking place.

In spite of that, I see reports that you remain supportive of your man and are thrilled by his victory.

So, yes, you have done your job well. You got him elected to the office that he badly wanted so that he could get back at everyone who had spoken against him and begin the process of becoming king, a position for which he is singularly unqualified.

Alas, though, your job is now over, and you are no longer needed. Suddenly you aren’t important to your hero. He doesn’t care about you anymore. You see, you have been nothing more than a useful tool to accomplish his task. Now he is free to forget you and switch allegiance to billionaires and dictators.

And it is likely you can never do anything about it, even if you finally realize you’ve been used, especially if Trump and his rich and powerful cronies manage to rig elections and remove the possibility of any retaliation you may eventually desire.

You have been a tool no longer of use.

You are a clawless hammer tossed under a bus.

Or is that a clueless hammer?

Scary—Whether True or Not

2/28/2025

I have heard about interviews with Republican members of Congress who were asked why Republicans weren’t standing up to Trump in order to moderate his behavior.

The purported response was they and their families are being threatened, I assume with physical harm.

Now I have not seen this report, nor have I come across any discussion of it so I can’t verify its veracity.

But, if it is true, it is about as scary as it is possible to be and would be direct proof our country is racing into dictatorship.

But even if it is not true, it’s incredibly scary.

Why? Because I have no difficulty in believing in the possibility of such a situation being set up by those in charge.

Do I really think there are thousands of individuals who would have no difficulty in carrying out assassinations if asked to do so?

Absolutely. Now I hope I’m correct in assuming the vast majority of Republicans and MAGA Kool Aid drinkers would be repulsed by such actions. If that’s not true, then our country truly is lost.

But is it really reasonable to believe, as I do, that there are thousands of nut jobs ready to line up and kill? I claim “yes.” After all, we’ve had plenty of evidence supporting the position.

For example, how about vehicle drivers who plow into peacefully protesting demonstrators who are expressing the “wrong” point of view?

Or how about the thousands who attacked the capitol on January 6, 2021? The ones pardoned by Donald Trump, automatically creating a fanatical group of loyalists who already have demonstrated no problem violating the law and attacking our democracy. A group many of whom purchased guns on their first day of freedom.

Or how about the Neo-Nazis who take over roads and threaten travelers?

The list can go on and on.

And, unfortunately, it doesn’t take millions of individuals to cause havoc and create enough fear to subdue any desire to protest. Several thousand, not millions, should suffice,

It’s not hard to envision a plan where willing assassins are distributed throughout the country, looking to uncover those disloyal. To me the following scenario makes sense. A tip comes about someone daring to challenge the president’s policies. Now imagine some leader of such a unit receiving this information and then assigning a “fixer” who will follow up by taking his gun and initiating a confrontation.

As recently as three months ago I would never have dreamed of such a system. Now I realize that it is a definite possibility.

And, as I’ve indicated, being able to imagine that is scary indeed.

Cruelty

2/18/2025

The words “cruel” and “cruelty” have been passing through my mind with regularity lately. Pretty obvious why, I’m sure.

One dictionary definition of cruelty is: “callous indifference to or pleasure in causing pain and suffering.”

A second is: “behavior that causes physical or mental pain to others and makes them suffer, especially deliberately.”

The result of an act of cruelty can be devastating.

Especially to any at whom it has been directed.

But what about the person fostering the act? What does that person feel?

I originally thought I could get an idea. Because certainly I have been what I consider cruel at times. I have become unfairly angry because of some minor problem. Perhaps I took my frustration out on an unfortunate representative of a company whose policy annoyed me and for whom the representative had no recourse but to follow the company line. I have become impatient with store clerks who couldn’t help me find the item I desired.

So how did it make me feel when I returned to a more rational state?

Not good. I recognized my bad behavior had hurt the individual who just happened to be in the way of my ire. I did not think highly of myself. If it was still possible, I apologized. I had been cruel, and it certainly didn’t make me feel good about myself.

But had I been cruel? All this remorse I felt seemed to fly in the face of the definitions given above. Where was the “callous indifference,” or “pleasure in causing pain and suffering,” or “makes them suffer, especially deliberately?”

Maybe there were better words than cruelty to describe my actions. Perhaps stupidity, selfishness, impatience or several others that seem to work. But, bad as my actions were, there was never any desire to hurt. At least I hope not.

I think truer examples of cruelty, examples that satisfy the definitions that include lack of caring about the people inflicted, can be found in our current national leadership. There are new examples emerging every day, coming so fast it’s hard to keep up.

Take the entire federal workforce, their retirement and security that had seemed so safe now threatened by fears of being fired.

Or the Dreamers who have spent the vast portion of their lives in the United States and are faced with removal to a country they don’t really know and certainly no longer is theirs. To make it worse, in Florida and some other states following the party line, Dreamers who are pursuing higher education have their hopes shattered because, without warning or reason, the state has decided to no longer permit them to pay in-state tuition.

Or all the illegal immigrants who face deportation to unsafe countries, perhaps with their children or perhaps not. Agreed, they are not here lawfully and this presents problems that must be solved, but they are humans with fears and aspirations like all of us.

All cruel examples, at least as far as the fostering of pain and suffering is concerned.

Now the question is, do those creating these and other situations feel any concern for those affected. Do people like Donald Trump or Elon Musk give one second’s thought to the plight of those they are targeting?

Or do those Trump has appointed to positions of power. Less clear, but they have already chosen the low road, putting aside any personal inclinations of decency in order to walk in the Master’s trail.

I have observed no feelings of concern or remorse from these and so many others.

So it turns out we have leaders and followers who are cruel according to the full definition of cruelty.

How can they live with themselves?

What pitiful beings they are!

Christianity Updated

1/24/2025

I was lucky. I had wonderful parents. I didn’t fully appreciate that until recently, way too late to tell them.

They were religious and raised me as a Christian in the Episcopal Church.

At least I thought they did.

I haven’t been a strong participant. But maybe that’s good.

Because now I’m having to accept that I didn’t understand the first thing about being a Christian.

I have come to see that, as a child, I learned archaic ideas that don’t reflect true Christian values.

How do I know?

I’m being taught every day by those who want to set me straight, to turn our country into a Christian nation so we all will be on the right path to salvation. No matter what we thought we believed.

For example, I was taught to be kind to people, even those who were different from me. What a wicked concept! I now understand that kindness should be shown only to those who look like me, and certainly not to the poor or desperate. For those others it is Christian to uproot them from their lives and send them elsewhere so they will be out of the way. How do I know this is a Christian concept? Well, so many of our current leaders have professed a strong Christian faith, and they are the ones carrying out these policies that I once thought were un-Christian. They must be right. After all, they are our leaders.

Another incorrect concept that my parents had me believe was the Golden Rule which has versions in many of the old religions. You know, the religions we thought gave excellent guidance but now we realize how grievously wrong they were. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It just sounds so good. It’s easy to see how someone could actually be swayed by such a radical concept. I thank our current true Christian leaders for telling us it’s okay to prosecute or otherwise threaten someone for disagreeing with us. I imagine, if the current leaders are ever stripped of their power, they will follow their beliefs and be more than willing to accept persecution from the other side.

I also learned something you are going to be amazed would be taught. When someone does you wrong, turn the other cheek. What? I’m just supposed to allow someone to hurt me and not retaliate in kind? It was always a difficult concept because it does seem to go against normal human behavior. But that didn’t phase my old-fashioned minister. In fact, he said the ability to do that would show others the Christian love of all mankind. Well, now I am learning with relief that the concept is incorrect. The right approach is, if you determine someone is not treating you right (according to your definition of right), you should retaliate in kind (or worse). For example, suppose you go to a church, making sure everyone knows what a good Christian you are by doing so, and the female cleric implores you to be kind. What an affront! The thing to do is to get back at her by scathing her on social media and also have flunkies demand that this cleric, who happens to be an American citizen, should be deported. Thank goodness I’m learning how to unnecessarily escalate tense situations.

I feel there are more lessons that will be imparted in the future and my understanding of Christianity will become clearer.

If there is an afterlife, I look forward to the day our leaders can set God and Jesus straight.

What To Write

1/17/2025

It’s time to post again. And I don’t have any idea what to say.

This has never been a problem in the past, even though I occasionally thought it might be. Because always something came up that made me mad, or there was some incident of my past that I had an overwhelming desire to share to those who probably didn’t care, or some politician was stupider than ever.

It isn’t as if there is nothing happening to arouse my ire or demand my time. After all, the current political situation could and eventually will fuel book after book. Surely a short post would be easy to create. That is, if there remains enough freedom to write it. Just think of the possibilities, only some of which are listed below in no special order.

The fear so many of us will feel as we will learn from Trump’s inaugural speech of the many ways he plans to ruin our country.

Including his dictatorial aspirations.

How Medicare and Social Security will fare now that Trump no longer has to promise that they won’t be affected.

How general health will deteriorate as a result of so many turning from vaccines in the interest of avoiding implants of microchips in their child’s body.

How our military will suffer under the leadership of a man whose personal record and experience are far from stellar,

How women will be treated as it becomes more and more obvious the incoming administration has bought into The Handmaid’s Tale.

How prejudice against all except rich white men pans out (unless they are Supreme Court justices).

How education, which is a concept feared by the new leaders, will deteriorate.

Whether the Republican majority in Congress will ever develop the guts to reestablish the safety of separation of powers supposedly afforded us by the Constitution.

Or the same concern for the judicial branch of the government.

What will happen to the Dreamers whose only memory is the United States, their home for virtually all their lives?

How journalists will live in fear and perhaps be made marginal.

How cruel will we be to those who fled to a former beacon of freedom as terror struck their lives in their home countries.

Whether we will follow the lies into a dictatorship like what happened in Nazi Germany.

Will the Democratic party learn from their mistakes and adjust to what the people of this country really want?

And will that party search out and foster young dynamic free-thinking leaders?

And the list could go on and on.

So, since all of the above, and so much more, is available for pontification, why is there a problem with producing a screed?

I don’t have a definitive answer. But I wonder if there aren’t so many topics like those posed above that it seems pointless to tackle just one

I know, at least for now, it is too much for me to write about. It is best for me to limit my exposure and my thought. Because it is painful to think I’m going to be an observer of the self-destruction of my country.

There aren’t many advantages to being old, but there are some.

Now What?

It didn’t seem real.

How could our country elect such a man to impose his will domestically and expose his incompetence externally?

It was a shock that hit so deep that many of us, maybe most of us, have been attempting to get through life by forcing it from our minds.

After all, we had more than two months before Trump could force his devastating policies on us. And we had the holiday season which was so much brighter than the future’s bleakness we all fear.

But now it’s January and the horror is coming in just a few days.

In fact, it’s January 6, four years to the day since a gang of ruffians attacked the capitol.

In fact, it’s January 6 of the current year in which the certification of the Trump victory will occur without the lying of four years past.

And we have to ask, “Now what?”

Will he actually do all he has threatened?

I have no doubt he will. We pretend otherwise at our peril.

Besides, we have seen foreshadowing of the future even while we were hiding behind holidays and pretension.

For example, we have learned of his cabinet picks, a sorry bunch in which Marco Rubio, believe it or not, stands out as the sanest and most competent.

In spite of all evidence to the contrary, I still can’t accept the vast majority of our country actually approves of the terror that is Donald Trump.

So does that make me feel better?

Not a bit!

But, grasping at straws, I’ve thought of scenarios that could conceivably save our country. Unfortunately, none comes without a price. I believe, sadly, that if our country is to be saved, it first must be hurt.

For whatever they are worth, the scenarios follow. If any of them actually occur, I’m thinking of hope for elections in two or four years (if we still have elections then).

  1. Many of Trump’s votes came from those worried about the economy, particularly about inflation. I believe the majority of these were single issue voters concerned about survival. Now what if, as several knowledgeable people have predicted, Trump’s policies of tariffs and alien deportation actually add to inflation? Would these single issue voters then swing back the other way? Downside: they and all of us would have to suffer the detrimental effect of inflation before it became obvious.
  2. The incompetents he has placed in charge of many of our government’s departments mess up so badly that the average Joe and Jane are affected negatively. Downside: we may have to deal with the reduction or elimination of vital services before this becomes obvious.
  3. Infighting within the Trump orbit, already begun, could delay or sabotage some of Trump’s policies, showing an inability to satisfy the demands of his base. Downside: who knows what would happen to policies we have come to rely on as different individuals attempt to prove their point by implementing disgusting “fixes.”
  4. The assignment of too much power to billionaires who have no understanding about the needs of the average citizen and employ their decision making to feather their own nests at the expense of the rest of the country. Downside: before getting their come-uppance, they will inflict so much damage it may take a long time to make it right.
  5. The lifetime of lying, poor eating, constant anger, and generally unhealthy lifestyle may finally catch up with Trump and bring him to his knees physically. Downside: originally, I couldn’t think of anything. Then I remembered J. D. Vance.
  6. Trump could act in ways that finally offend his supporters so much that they would abandon him. Downside: we’d all have to live with whatever this bad action was and it’s doubtful his believers would hold him accountable anyway. After all, they have forgiven his role in an insurrection, sexual misadventures, lying, and so much more. Why should we expect different in the future?

I wish my list made me feel better.
