The Right Question

Do I want President Biden to drop out of the presidential race?

Or do I want him to stay?

The drop out contingent is strong. Biden had a bad night during the debate. Even before then many were concerned about his health and ability to serve out a term or strongly handle the demands of the presidency. Major newspapers via columnists and editorialists have urged his removal from the ticket. Important people from his own party have come out publicly in favor of his removal. Uniformly they say he has been a good president and failure to leave will harm if not completely ruin his legacy. I fear that once again the Democratic party is doing all in its power to lose an election.

I think it’s interesting that all these knowledgeable individuals negative about Biden, at least the non-political ones, fail to point out that Donald Trump is an old, bumbling, often incoherent, always lying, narcissist more interested in himself than the advancement of the country. But that’s another matter.

One of the biggest proponents of Biden remaining in the race is Biden himself. In fact, he has recently announced that he has every intention of staying, that he is the only one who can beat Trump. I am not sure what role his ego is playing in this decision, but I am concerned it is major. He has been such a good public servant his entire life, devoting excessive energy to the various roles he has played in service to his state and then his nation. I hope he is being entirely honest with us all about his capabilities as he made his decision.

In spite of all the “wisdom” expounded by the talking heads, the political advocates, and individuals throughout the country on which decision should be made, I submit they are not dealing with the correct question. I’m sure many are factoring in the correct question in their recommendations, but I don’t think the emphasis on their words is in the right place.

The correct question, in fact the only question, is what decision is the one that has the best chance of defeating Trump, for, as has been frequently stated, the future of our country and its democratic principles is at stake. So the answer to the correct question should depend on that alone, no matter who is hurt.

I don’t have the foggiest idea about the correct answer to the correct question.

I think it’s unwise to change horses in midstream. On the other hand, so many influential people have flooded the waters of that midstream with doubts about the horse’s ability, I can’t help but wonder if they haven’t made winning impossible. Nevertheless, Biden has beaten Trump before and he brings an optimism to the nation that we need.

But I can see the advantage of a new face. A lot of people who plan to vote for Trump don’t like Trump but they have a fear of Biden. I can understand and even believe the argument that many might drop Trump for a reasonable middle-of-the-road candidate. But, or course, there is the question of who that candidate might be. And will Democrats on the far-left support such a person? After all, there is real concern about whether they would even support Biden, willing to drive the country into the ground unless they can get their way.

What will happen? Who knows? What I do know is I often lie awake at night worrying about the future of our country.

No matter what, it is essential that we all vote, and we do everything in our power to assure everyone else votes. At least the people who don’t support Trump. Especially the Republicans who are wary of Trump.

So pleased you are writing again, Pa Pa Bob! And, about very important matters. SOOOOOOOO important that we all get out to vote this year. There are not easy answers, the question you pose is the correct one, and, you are correct - we all need to take action to save our democracy by voting. Thank you for being an important voice in reminding folks to do so.
