DEI

Our president, our governor, and so many more have explained to us how we have suffered under the stress of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) far too long. You know, the program where there is recognition that certain classes of people have been treated unfairly in the past when it come to things like workplaces and education. DEI programs attempt to partially rectify this by teaching about related history and, are you ready for this, allowing consideration of such factors in job applications and admission to college.

Our government clearly sees injustice in this emphasis and is hell bent on driving it from our society.

So, who is really affected by the elimination of DEI?

Well, there are the people who don’t look like our leaders. Blacks, for example. Imagine the unfair help they have received simply because they still are emerging from centuries of slavery and Jim Crow. No more will that aid be available. About that slavery and Jim Crow, by the way. It will be wiped out of our history if the government gets its way. We certainly don’t want it taught to high school kids and others who may feel uncomfortable upon learning facts. Because the “real” history of our country is based on the founding fathers, and the truism that many of them had slaves doesn’t matter. Textbooks will have to reflect this new reality. Sure, in some cases we can mention a Black’s name if it is a newsworthy event. But just because, for example, one is the first Black to fly into space, that is not to be mentioned. Any photographs showing it should be removed from web sites. The elimination of DEI in college admissions already is creating a significant drop in Black enrollees.

And then there are those who don’t talk like the leaders. You know, the ones with accents and even, gasp, those who have not yet mastered the simplicities of our language. These people can’t be real Americans or have rights in this country no matter what citizenship or visa papers they produce. Even if they’ve lived here their entire lives. Instead of helping them with DEI initiatives, we are going to work hard to deport them and make any who remain live in constant fear.

Another group which has benefited by DEI programs are those whose lifestyle differs from that of the leaders. In particular, LGBTQ+ individuals who have worked so long to be accepted and have endured such nasty prejudice. Well, those in charge clearly see that getting rid of DEI for them is the right course. Not only because under it this group has in the past received unfair special protection and benefits. But because they represent a real threat—because they are different.

There’s another large group that the leaders want to marginalize. Women! Now this is a bit tricky because, you see, some women are white, speak perfect English, and are not gay. Yet when it comes to hiring or admission to college, there has in the past been recognition that there might be real advantages in encouraging women applicants. Clearly unfair! Talking out of one side of their mouths, leaders have appointed women to important positions, like Chief of Staff. But the other side of their mouths gives us the real feelings: women should receive little education, keep a home and stay in it, and have lots of children. Preferably white, male, and straight children. Do not use words in documents like “women,” “female,” and “her.” Welcome to the Handmaiden’s Tale.

I think elimination of DEI is accomplishing a lot. After all, these morally upright leaders have thrown out any special history of or special aid for Blacks, Hispanics, gays, and women. History is being rewritten so members of these groups will not be noted for groundbreaking achievements. Photographs of their accomplishments are being removed from various sites.

But, in my opinion, the work has not gone far enough and I’m disappointed in our leaders for doing a sloppy job.

Because there is another special group for which the so-called elimination of DEI actually has given a distinct advantage. Essentially, this means DEI hasn’t been fully expunged. Hopefully our leaders will soon correct this oversight.

What is this group?

White people, of course, especially white males. The revised history books still have pictures of white males. They get appointed to all the top spots like they have in the past. It’s clear they are benefitting by this unrecognized diversity which gives them extra advantages.

It is not right and I’m hopeful our leaders will soon see the wisdom of this argument and take appropriate steps. Like not using words in documents such as “men,” “male,” and “him.”

Aren’t you sure something will be done about this inequitable situation?

Hah!
